Swordfishing has increased in popularity ten-fold in the past couple of years, mainly because of the recent development of daytime swordfishing (it used to primarily be done at night) and accessibility of electric reels. If you love fishing, I'm sure a swordfish is on your bucket list. The good news is, Palm Beach County residents and visitors alike have plenty access to fishing charters. Whether swordfishing is something to cross off of your bucketlist, or you want to learn how to rig and do it yourself, below is a list of friendly local captains who can help your dreams come true.

Established in 1935 by the West Palm Beach Fishing Club, the Silver Sailfish Derby is the oldest running sailfish tournament in the world. Limited to 50 boats, the 2020 Derby is sold out.

The Silver Sailfish Derby is a tournament with a massive amount of history, credited with developing the red release pennant and as one of the front-runners in promoting catch and release. Ernest Hemingway was a Derby trophy sponsor at one point, and the only time the tournament didn’t run was for three years during WWII.

The Derby features a two-day, Thursday & Friday, fishing format - a measure that was taken to avoid competition with weekend anglers and to foster increased tournament participation.

As we ring in 2020, we reflect on a turbulent year helping our friends at Old Bahama Bay rebuild after Hurricane Dorian. Winner’s Circle Charities was the first organization cleared by the President of OBB to arrive at the docks, and swiftly organized donation drop-off locations, sponsored Costco trips, and secured hundreds of boats to respond to the needs of families and friends in the Bahamas. Rest assured, OBB is back and better than ever! If it wasn’t for the Winner’s Circle Charities Fishing Tournament every year, Winner’s Circle Charities would not have had the immediate resources available to facilitate such a timely response, so thank you so much to every team who participates every single year!

Sailfish are biting from Stuart to Boca in the 150-300’ range, with a few boats releasing 10+ sails. Try kite fishing with hearty live baits like goggle-eyes or blue runners. Trolling with small feathers during lowlight should help you catch a few football-sized blackfin tuna, and the smaller ones can be used to catch wahoo, which has been hot due to this mild cold front, especially in the Bahamas. Fair numbers of snapper have been prevalent around 100’ off of Jupiter, with a few cobia here and there as well.

The cold front has slowed snook down a bit, but mullet are still running. Live mullet or
